WHRHS PTO Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 7:45 pm by President Laura Mandell. Laura
opened introducing the new PTO board members. A motion to accept the minutes
from the prior meeting was made by Dawn Fourgeau-Ciers, seconded by Regina
Cesareo. All approved and the motion carried.
The Treasurer’s Report was given by Rosemary O’Connor. She presented the
Proposed Budget as well as a Statement of Financial Condition. Fundraising was
up last year, and we anticipate being able to meet last years levels. The
reports were approved. A motion to accept the minutes from the prior meeting
was made by Dawn Christine Getz, seconded by Paulette Kampe. All approved and
the motion carried.
Laura Mandell opened her President’s Report by stating that her objective for
the PTO this year is to support a strong PTO through volunteer participation,
fundraising and wise allocation of resources to benefit the students.
As of this time, Laura has contacted all the volunteers she has listed. If
you wanted to participate in an activity, but have not been contacted by Laura
or the committee chair, please contact Laura at:

- Thursday, September 28 - Back to School Night
Information is being mailed from the school this week.
- Thursday, October 11 at 7:00 pm The College Interview Process at
the Long Hill Library, (http://www.longhilllibrary.org/lib/)
- Wednesday, October 18 from 7:30 to 8:00pm – (Note: this is different
from what was announced at the meeting). A representative from the Star
Ledger will speak following the PTO meeting about how to use the newspaper
with your student for school assignments.
- Thursday, Oct. 26 at 7:00pm Michael Fowlin Presentation
Will be given during school to the freshmen. The excellent presentation on
diversity and tolerance will be repeated in the evening for parents and all
students.
- Wednesday, Feb. 28 at 7:30pm Parent Awareness Program “My Space”
- Friday, Mar. 9 Parent Teacher Talent Show
The Vice President’s Report was given by Laura Mandell in Liz George’s
absence. We currently have 474 members (of about 1600 families in the
district).
The Corresponding Secretary, Colleen Mehegan, reported sending out
condolences to one district family following the death of their daughter, and
congratulating several teachers on promotions.

- With the end-of-year gift from the PTO, the library was able to add about 130
new books, both YA fiction and non-fiction. The library for students from 7:30am until 4pm.
- Students should know that they can remotely access many electronic resources,
including 18 databases, lists of resource web-links, and sets of electronic
reference books (E-books). The access more information on-line about the school
library, go to the school web site, select “Departments” and the “Media

- The Library is in need of volunteers to help process and shelf books. Anyone
interested in helping out at the library should contact Librarian,
Vivian Swartz.

- The school had very smooth (and on time!) opening.
- As relates to scheduling, accommodating are being made for the very
large “B” lunch by adding cafeteria staff and opening other areas for the
students to eat. This year the school is experimenting with block
scheduling for physical education and science, allowing double periods on
alternating days for these two activities. The program is exciting,
and will be monitored and “tweaked” throughout the year.
- There will be a Pep Rally on the football field on Thursday (9/21)
- The freshman dance worked nicely in conjunction with the home football game.
- Packages will be sent out soon for back-to-school night. Carpooling is
encouraged. Please remember that no one may park on the overpass about Route 78!
- September 29 will be a half day, and there will be no school on Monday,
October 2.
- Communication between the school and the family: important notices
will be mailed. Information will be posted on the high school website,
http://whrhs.org.
Information will also be displayed on the marquee in front of the school.
School closing information will be available on the website as well at the main
telephone number.
- Watch for more information about the November Gala. (the 4th?)
Committee Reports: as it was late, every committee was not

Karen is still looking for volunteers to help with this one-month pilot
program. Interested ambassadors will sit at a “welcome table” to greet
visitors to the high school. Contact Karen for details.

- School Board Community Relations Committee: Pete Fallon pfallon@whrhs.org
Representing the Board’s community relations committee, Pete had two items to
present:
- Every effort will be made to have the new budget ready sooner that is
was last year, giving more time to present it to the public.
- Arts and Education Foundation is being created to make use of the new
theater; to raise money through the utilization of the new theater; and to
support the programs directed by the Foundation. Anyone interested in being
a member of this foundation should contact Pete directly.
